Gospel Wednesday: Colossians Chapter 3: Our Treasure

Colossians Chapter 3

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:1‭-‬4 NKJV

As New Testament Christians, we should be actively seeking those things above, not things on the earth. Our lives are hidden with Christ in God, and we will appear with Him in glory when He returns. No earthly possession can compare with that.

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Matthew 6:19‭-‬21 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.6.19-21.NKJV

We should lay up treasures in heaven, not in this world that will pass away (2 Peter 3:10).
Where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. Let's be forewarned and make heaven our treasure.

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy.

I Timothy 6:17 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1ti.6.17.NKJV

If we have food, clothing, plumbing, shelter then we are rich. Some people have none of these things and are indeed poor. Think on that. We should never trust in material possessions for they will be dissolved with the distruction of this world (1 Peter 3:10).

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5 NKJV

https://bible.com/bible/114/heb.13.5.NKJV

We should never covet. Just be content with what we have. God will never leave us nor forsake us. Comforting promise.

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

I Timothy 6:7 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1ti.6.7.NKJV

And we brought nothing into the world. At death we take nothing with us.

Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

I Timothy 6:17‭-‬19 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/1ti.6.17-19.NKJV

The command once again. To not trust in uncertain riches. But do good, be ready to give, share that we may store up a good foundation and lay hold of eternal life.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,

I Peter 1:3‭-‬4 NKJV

Just focus on the living hope of heaven. Make heaven our treasure.

The Gospel in a nutshell

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
