Gospel Wednesday: 2 Corinthians Chapter 13: Examine Ourselves

2 Corinthians Chapter 13

This will be the third time I am coming to you. “By the mouth of two or three witnesses every word shall be established.” I have told you before, and foretell as if I were present the second time, and now being absent I write to those who have sinned before, and to all the rest, that if I come again I will not spare— since you seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, who is not weak toward you, but mighty in you. For though He was crucified in weakness, yet He lives by the power of God. For we also are weak in Him, but we shall live with Him by the power of God toward you. Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified. Now I pray to God that you do no evil, not that we should appear approved, but that you should do what is honorable, though we may seem disqualified. For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. And this also we pray, that you may be made complete. Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the authority which the Lord has given me for edification and not for destruction. Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.

Examine. We should all examine ourselves daily.

1. Am I keeping the first greatest commandment?

Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’

Matthew 22:37 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.22.37.NKJV

2. Am I keeping the second greatest commandment?

And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

Matthew 22:39 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.22.39.NKJV

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

James 1:27 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/jas.1.27.NKJV

Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Matthew 25:34‭-‬40 NKJV

3. Have I been seeking to teach others?

for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Luke 19:10 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/luk.19.10.NKJV

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Matthew 28:19‭-‬20 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.28.19-20.NKJV

4. Am I growing as a Christian?

But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.

II Peter 1:5‭-‬7 NKJV
https://bible.com/bible/114/2pe.1.5-7.NKJV

5. Do I worship God in spirit and in truth?

But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

John 4:23‭-‬24 NKJV

Acts of worship we engage in every Lord's Day (Sunday)

Lord's Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-26), prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-2), preaching and teaching God's Word (2 Timothy 2:2), giving (1 Corinthians 16:2), singing (Colossians 3:16).

6. Do I diligently resist the temptation of sin?

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.

Romans 6:12 NKJV

This is a great way to examine ourselves each day.

The Gospel in a nutshell

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
