What Does The Scripture Say: The Presbyterian Church

What Does The Scripture Say

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. - Colossians 3:17 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians3:17&version=NKJV

Today we are going to examine the Presbyterian church.

All we do and say must be done by Jesus authority.

1535-1560 Presbyterian movement started.

In Germany under John Calvin and moved Switzerland where it became the state religion under John Knox.

But the Lord's church began on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem in the first century. Read Acts 2. This is the place and time when it started.

Headquarters Louiseville, KN and Atlanta, GA.

who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son” ? - Hebrews 1:3-5 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews1:3-5&version=NKJV

The headquarters for the Lord's church is Heaven.

John Knox is the founder of the Presbyterian church.

Yet Jesus is the founder of the Lord's church.

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. - 1 Corinthians 3:11 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Corinthians3:11&version=NKJV

And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. - Matthew 16:18 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew16:18&version=NKJV

Authority is West Minister Confession of Faith and Catechism.

Wait. The proper authority is the Bible.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2Timothy3:16-17&version=NKJV

We need only the Bible. Nothing more, nothing less.

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. - Jude 1:3 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jude1:3&version=NKJV

We are to contend earnestly for the faith.

Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other. - 1 Corinthians 4:6 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Corinthians4:6&version=NKJV

And not to go beyond what is written.

Doctrines

1. Total depravity
We are totally depraved. No ability to turn to God.

“What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children’s teeth are set on edge’?“Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself. - Ezekiel 18:2,4,20 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel18:2,4,20&version=NKJV

Babies and children can't sin.

You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you. - Ezekiel 28:15 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ezekiel28:15&version=NKJV

Age of accountability.

2. Unconditional election
Some men and angels predestined to life; others to eternal death. Can't be changed.

And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord .” - Joshua 24:15 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Joshua24:15&version=NKJV

We have a choice.

Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. - Acts 10:34-35 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts10:34-35&version=NKJV

We can fear God and work righteousness.

God wants all to be saved, not just a select few!

3. Limited atonement
This is the one I really hate. Jesus' death sufficient only for the elect. Utter hogwash!

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, - Titus 2:11 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus2:11&version=NKJV

Salvation for all. Period!

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. - Hebrews 2:9 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews2:9&version=NKJV

Jesus died for everyone.

4. Irresistible grace
God makes a call. Can't resist the call by the Spirit.

But in Acts 6 and 7 some rejected the Gospel. God won't force Himself on us.

We have a choice: Accept God's grace and obey the Gospel, or not.

5. Perseverance of the saints
No falling away. Saved always.

You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. - Galatians 5:4 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians5:4&version=NKJV

We can become estranged from Christ. Can fall away from grace.

He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. - Revelation 3:5 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation3:5&version=NKJV

Our names can be blotted out of the Book of Life.

If you are in the Presbyterian church, leave immediately. Obey the Gospel and be added to the Lord's church today (Acts 2:47).

And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified. Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” - Matthew 27:31,35 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew27:31,35&version=NKJV

Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. - John 19:19 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John19:19&version=NKJV

And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their headsand saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. - Matthew 27:39-40,46,50 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew27:39-40,46,50&version=NKJV

Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree” ), - Galatians 3:13 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians3:13&version=NKJV

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. - Ephesians 2:13 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians2:13&version=NKJV

and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. - Colossians 1:20 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians1:20&version=NKJV

But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. - Galatians 6:14 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians6:14&version=NKJV

1. Hear
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. - Romans 10:17 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans10:17&version=NKJV

2. Believe
Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” - John 8:24 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John8:24&version=NKJV

3. Repent
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. - Luke 13:3 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke13:3&version=NKJV

4. Confess
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. - Matthew 10:32-33 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew10:32-33&version=NKJV

5. Be baptized
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. - Mark 16:16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark16:16&version=NKJV

6. Remain faithful
Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. - Revelation 2:10 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation2:10&version=NKJV
