In Depth Bible Study: Standing on the Edge of Eternity Lesson 3
Standing on the Edge of Eternity
Lesson 3
“Man who is born of woman Is of few days and full of trouble. He comes forth like a flower and fades away; He flees like a shadow and does not continue. And do You open Your eyes on such a one, And bring me to judgment with Yourself?Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one!Since his days are determined, The number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.Look away from him that he may rest, Till like a hired man he finishes his day.“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, And that its tender shoots will not cease.Though its root may grow old in the earth, And its stump may die in the ground,Yet at the scent of water it will bud And bring forth branches like a plant. But man dies and is laid away; Indeed he breathes his last And where is he?As water disappears from the sea, And a river becomes parched and dries up,So man lies down and does not rise. Till the heavens are no more, They will not awake Nor be roused from their sleep. - Job 14:1-12 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Job14:1-12&version=NKJV
We die. And there are no second chances. We can't come back to amend wrongs or obey the Gospel. Moses and Elijah talked with Jesus on the mountain:Matthew 17:3). This proves there is life after death.
Jesus is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25-26). This should give us hope as New Testament Christians. Jesus is eternal (Micah 5:2, Matthew 2:1-6). He is the Bread of Life and if we abide in Him we will have eternal life.
Now Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside on the road and said to them,“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify. And the third day He will rise again.” - Matthew 20:17-19 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew20:17-19&version=NKJV
Jesus knew He would rise again after His death. Jesus is the Son of God. And raised through God's power (Romans 1:4). Eternal life is in Jesus (1 John 5:11).
Jesus is our high priest. Let's not stumble and fall but hold to that hope of eternal life in Jesus (Hebrews 6:11-20). God has promised us eternal life (1 John 2:25). If we sacrifice all for Jesus we will have eternal life (Mark 10:28-30).
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voiceand come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. - John 5:28-29 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John5:28-29&version=NKJV
Which resurrection will we take part in? Life or condemnation? Don't forsake Jesus. Only He has the words of eternal life (John 6:68). Jesus gives His sheep eternal life (John 10:28). We should never hold onto this life, but be willing to sacrifice it for Christ. This guarantees eternal life (John 12:25).
eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For there is no partiality with God. - Romans 2:7-11 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans2:7-11&version=NKJV
God shows no partiality. Either we have eternal life or we don't. It depends upon obeying the Gospel and serving God and our fellow man.
