Sacred Truth Friday: Living Our Lives; What If This Were the Last Sermon I Were to Ever Hear?
Stephen and Royce were in Montgomery, Alabama attending a funeral. So Larry Jackson preached the morning sermon, and Charlie Franks the afternoon sermon.
Morning Sermon
Living Our Lives
But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left.Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. - Matthew 24:37-44 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew24:37-44&version=NKJV
It is possible to get so busy living our lives we forget that Jesus will return. This world will be destroyed (2 Peter 3:10), death and judgement is coming to all (Hebrews 9:27). We will all give account to God. So never hold anyone in contempt as though we're better than them (Romans 14:10-12). And the way we treat others indeed does determine our destiny: heaven or hell (Matthew 25:31-46). Don't be so in love with this world we become an enemy of God (1 John 2:15-16). We should put off all sin, be renewed each day (Colossians 3:5-10), abound in His work (1 Corinthians 15:58), and use our talents for His kingdom (Matthew 25:14-30).
Lesson: don't get so caught up in this life (relationships, careers, hobbies) we forget all about eternity.
Afternoon Sermon
What If This Were the Last
Sermon I Were to Ever Hear?
Let's ask ourselves the following questions:
1. Have I obeyed the Gospel?
For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. - Ephesians 5:23 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians5:23&version=NKJV
Christ is the head of the church. We submit to His Lordship by obeying the Gospel. When we obey the Gospel we receive remission of sins as well.
2. Am I living according to God's will?
A. Putting God first
Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’This is the first and great commandment. - Matthew 22:37-38 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew22:37-38&version=NKJV
B. Loving our fellow man
And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” - Matthew 22:39-40 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew22:39-40&version=NKJV
C. Am I teaching others?
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. - Matthew 28:19-20 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew28:19-20&version=NKJV
D. Am I growing?
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. - Matthew 28:19-20 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew28:19-20&version=NKJV
E. Am I worshipping in Spirit and Truth?
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” - John 4:24 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John4:24&version=NKJV
A. Singing (Ephesians 5:19)
B. Prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
C. Preaching (Acts 20:7)
D. Lord's Supper (Matthew 26-29)
E. Giving (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).
F. Do I diligently resist sin?
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. - Romans 6:12 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans6:12&version=NKJV
3. Where will I spend eternity?
“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. - Matthew 7:13-14 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew7:13-14&version=NKJV
where ‘Their worm does not die And the fire is not quenched.’ - Mark 9:44 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark9:44&version=NKJV
Lesson: examine ourselves daily with the above questions (2 Corinthians 13:5). Stay prepared.
