In Depth Bible Study: Qualities of Love
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; - 1 Corinthians 13:4 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Corinthians13:4&version=NKJV. Love is not full of itself.
But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi, Rabbi.’ - Matthew 23:5-7 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew23:5-7&version=NKJV
Seeking glory from men. Exalting self. Condemned in the Scriptures.
Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” - Luke 18:9-14 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke18:9-14&version=NKJV
Phariseebragging on self. Tax collector humbled himself.
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. - Philippians 2:3-8 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians2:3-8&version=NKJV
Empty ourselves and look out for others. Jesus did this.
“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him;and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” - Luke 14:8-11 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke14:8-11&version=NKJV
Humble ourselves.
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; - Romans 12:10 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans12:10&version=NKJV
Prefer others above self.
