Sacred Truth Friday: Jesus Our High Priest

he shall bring to the Lord as his compensation for the sin that he has committed, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin.

Then he shall offer the second for a burnt offering according to the rule. And the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin that he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.

Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed in any one of these things, and he shall be forgiven. And the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the grain offering.” (Leviticus 5:6, 10, 13 ESV)

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV)

In the Old Testament days, when the people of Isreal would sin, they would have to go to the priest, bringing an animal (lamb, bull, or goat) with them, to make an offering for their sin and guilt, thus being forgiven.

Of course, this system did not work. Every time they sinned against God, they would have to offer an animal to be sacrificed so they could be forgiven. If the blood of lambs, bulls, and goats really worked they would not have to keep going to the priest and offering sacrifices.

Thank God for Jesus our high priest. Who came to offer Himself once and for all on our behalf, thus bringing in the new covenant of Christianity and doing away with the old covenant of Judaism and animal sacrifice. Jesus covers it all. Through Jesus, our sins are forgiven completely. We don't have to go to a priest and offer an animal for a sacrifice to be forgiven.

Jesus paid it all. Jesus, our high priest intercedes on our behalf, and we can approach the throne of grace with confidence knowing we will receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Thank God for Jesus, our priest.

I've been following a great 3 year reading plan at the following website.

3 Year Bible Reading Plan

Feel like I can learn more if I read a little at a time from God's Word. Been following this plan since April 11 of this year.
