Gospel Wednesday: John Chapter 5

This week, we're in John chapter 5.

“After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame,
paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had. Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
And that day was the Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.'
"Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.
But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.”
Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. Then Jesus
answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

"If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another who bears witness of Me, and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.
You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
"I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you—Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?””
John 5:1-47 NKJV

“For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath. But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God. John 5:16-23 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.16-23.nkjv

John 5:16-23 stand out to me.

Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath and the religious leaders accused Him of not keeping the Sabbath. How absurd. They had man made laws but no relationship with God.

Let's look at parallel verses, starting with verse 16.

First, look at what the title says in this picture: Honor the Father and the Son. We are to honor not only God, but His Son, Jesus, as well. To dishonor Jesus is to dishonor God as well.

Now onto verse 16

“For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.”
John 5:16 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.16.nkjv

“and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff.”
Luke 4:29 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/luk.4.29.nkjv

““I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.”
John 8:37 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.8.37.nkjv

“Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.”
John 10:39 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.10.39.nkjv

Look at what is going on in this verses: Luke 4:16-30. Jesus read the book of Isaiah in the synagogue at Nazareth. Then he declared the Scriptures fulfilled in Isaiah by Him. The Jews of His day  attempted to kill Him by throwing Him off a cliff but He escaped their clutches (Luke 4:29-30).

Then this scene in John 8: 37-47.
He told the Jews  that the true children of Abraham and God are those who believe the Son of God and love Him.

Then John 10:31-40: They (the Jews) attempted to stone Him when He declared Himself to be the Son of God.

How sad they didn't see the truth staring them right in the face! God in the flesh, living and breathing among them.

Onto verse 17

“But Jesus answered them, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.””
John 5:17 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.17.nkjv

“I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.”
John 9:4 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.9.4.nkjv

Jesus declared, in these verses, He must do His Father's (God's) work which is to be a sacrifice for our sins.

Verse 18

“Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.”
John 5:18 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.18.nkjv

“I and My Father are one.””
John 10:30 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.10.30.nkjv

“who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,”
Philippians 2:6 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/php.2.6.nkjv

Jesus made Himself equal with God (John 8:18 and John 10:30). This angered the Jews. They wanted to kill Him.

In Phillippians 2:5-11 it explains how Jesus came to earth as a humble servant. Left His home of glory and is the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Verse 19

“Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.”
John 5:19 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.19.nkjv

“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. ””
Matthew 26:39 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/mat.26.39.nkjv

“I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.”
John 5:30 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.30.nkjv

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”
John 6:38 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.6.38.nkjv

“Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.”
John 8:28 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.8.28.nkjv

“For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.”
John 12:49 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.12.49.nkjv

“Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.”
John 14:10 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.14.10.nkjv

In these verses, Jesus is declaring that He does the will of the Father and speaks His Father's Words.

Jesus even prayed in the garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-44) for the cup to be taken from Him (going to the cross and dying a horrible death). Nevertheless, He declared He would do God's will (Matthew 26:39;42).

Verse 20

“For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.”
John 5:20 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.20.nkjv

“When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.””
Matthew 3:16-17 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/mat.3.16-17.nkjv

“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.”
John 3:35 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.3.35.nkjv

“For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.””
II Peter 1:17 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/2pe.1.17.nkjv

“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
Matthew 11:27 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/mat.11.27.nkjv

These verses declare that God loves the Son and gives Him honor and glory.

Verse 21

“For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.”
John 5:21 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.21.nkjv

“Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.””
Luke 7:14 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/luk.7.14.nkjv

“But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.””
Luke 8:54 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/luk.8.54.nkjv

“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.”
John 11:25 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.11.25.nkjv

Jesus had the authority, the power to raise people from the dead (widow of Nain's son raised from the dead. Luke 7:22-14 and Jairus's daughter raised from the dead. Luke 8:41;49-56).

Since He had the power to raise people from the dead, this proves He's the Son of God. Amen!

Verse 22

“For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son,”
John 5:22 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.22.nkjv

“All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
Matthew 11:27 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/mat.11.27.nkjv

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”
Matthew 28:18 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/mat.28.18.nkjv

“The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.”
John 3:35 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.3.35.nkjv

“because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.””
Acts 17:31 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/act.17.31.nkjv

“They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.”
I Peter 4:5 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/1pe.4.5.nkjv

These verses declare that God has given Jesus all authority, including the authority  to judge.

Jesus will judge us, our deeds whether good or bad, when we pass on from this life.

Ought to prompt you to obey the Gospel if you haven't done so already, and to remain faithful to God if you've already obeyed the Gospel.

Verse 23

“that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”
John 5:23 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/jhn.5.23.nkjv

“He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.””
Luke 10:16 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/luk.10.16.nkjv

“Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.”
I John 2:23 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/1jn.2.23.nkjv

These verses say if you reject or deny the Son, your are rejecting or denying God. And do not have God. Scary thought.

Please don't be like the Jews of Jesus' day. Don't reject Him. Obey the Gospel. Your eternal future/destiny depends on your choice. Reject or obey the Gospel. There is no middle ground here. Either you reject the Gospel or you obey it.

1 HEAR
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?

17 So faith comes through hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:14;17 ESV

2 BELIEVE
24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.
John 8:24 ESV

3 REPENT
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent
Acts 17:30 ESV

4 CONFESS THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. Romans 10:9-10 ESV

5 BE BAPTIZED
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 2:38 ESV
16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name. Acts 22:16 ESV

6 REMAIN FAITHFUL
10 Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. Revelation 2:10 ESV
11 I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. Revelation 3:11 ESV

Obey the Gospel before it's everlasting too late. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. That we will be alive. Our life is fleeting.

“because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.”
I Peter 1:24-25 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/1pe.1.24-25.nkjv

“The voice said, “Cry out!” And he said, “What shall I cry?” “All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.””
Isaiah 40:6-8 NKJV
http://bible.com/114/isa.40.6-8.nkjv

Obey the Gospel. Once you pass on from this world, it will be too late. Obey the Gospel today. Do not delay!
