Sacred Truth Friday: Rebaptism; Carried Away
Morning Sermon: Rebaptism
And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some discipleshe said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all. - Acts 19:1-7 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts19:1-7&version=NKJV
A. These men never heard of the Holy Spirit
B. These men received John's baptism through Apollos (Acts 18:24-25)
C. Apollos was corrected by Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:26)
D. Paul preached the Gospel to them
E. They were gladly rebaptized for the correct reasons
who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. - 1 Timothy 2:4 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Timothy2:4&version=NKJV
A. God wants all to be saved
1. Have God's mindset toward the lost
one Lord, one faith, one baptism; - Ephesians 4:5 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians4:5&version=NKJV
A. One Lord, one faith, one baptism
1. One baptism=immersion. Sprinkling and pouring won't suffice
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, - Matthew 28:19 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew28:19&version=NKJV
A. Teach others the Gospel
B. Baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
1. Hear
How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. - Romans 10:14,17 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans10:14,17&version=NKJV
Jesus suffered, bled, and died for our sins (Matthew 26-27, Mark 14-15, Luke 22-23, John 18-19). He arose the third day (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20)
2. Beleve
He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. - Mark 16:16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark16:16&version=NKJV
3. Repent
I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. - Luke 13:3 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke13:3&version=NKJV
4. Confess
Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” - Acts 8:36-37 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts8:36-37&version=NKJV
5. Be baptized
Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. - Acts 2:38 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts2:38&version=NKJV
6. Remain faithful
Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. - Revelation 2:10 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation2:10&version=NKJV
Lesson: if you were baptized for the wrong reasons (everybody else is doing it) or didn't fully understand why (baptism is for remission of sins) or even received denominational baptism, then I encourage you to be rebaptized today. Better to be safe than eternally sorry.
Afternoon Sermon: Carried Away
Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. - Hebrews 13:9 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews13:9&version=NKJV
A. Don't be carried away by strange and various doctrines
But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: - Titus 2:1 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus2:1&version=NKJV
A. Speak Biblical doctrine
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. - 1 Timothy 4:16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Timothy4:16&version=NKJV
A. Take heed to what I teach
Example: Hymeneaus and Philetus
And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. - 2 Timothy 2:17-18 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2Timothy2:17-18&version=NKJV
A. These men taught false doctrine
B. They jeopardized their relationship with God
C. They led others astray
Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voiceand come forth— those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. - John 5:28-29 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John5:28-29&version=NKJV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. - 2 Corinthians 5:10 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2Corinthians5:10&version=NKJV
Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. - 1 Corinthians 15:24 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Corinthians15:24&version=NKJV
These are future events that have not happened yet.
Lesson: know my Bible. If a religious teaching is not supported by the Bible, it's false. Reject it.
