Sacred Truth Friday: The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Also He spoke this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee  stood and prayed thus with himself,  ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other;  for everyone who exalts himself will be  humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” - Luke 18:9-14 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke18:9-14&version=NKJV
This parable contains a lesson in humility.
Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him.And He said to them, “You are those who  justify yourselves  before men, but  God knows your hearts. For  what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. - Luke 16:14-15 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke16:14-15&version=NKJV
Don't justify myself. Let God justify me.
not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, - Titus 3:5 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus3:5&version=NKJV

Surely He scorns the scornful, But gives grace to the humble. - Proverbs 3:34 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs3:34&version=NKJV
God scorns the prideful, but gives grace to the humble.
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and  coming in the likeness of men.And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. - Philippians 2:5-8 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians2:5-8&version=NKJV
Be a humble obedient servant like Jesus.
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. - Philippians 2:3 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians2:3&version=NKJV
Do nothing out of selfishness or conceit but in humility consider others better than myself.
But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.”Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. - James 4:6-10 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James4:6-10&version=NKJV
This is a key ingredient to confession and repentance: humility. Be humble and have godly sorrow (2 Corinthians 7:10) as I confess and repent of any sin in my life.
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But  gives grace to the humble.”Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, - 1 Peter 5:5-6 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Peter5:5-6&version=NKJV
