What Does The Scripture Say: Misconceptions about the church of Christ

Misconceptions about the church of Christ

1. Don't believe in music
speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, - Ephesians 5:19 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians5:19&version=NKJV

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. - Colossians 3:16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Colossians3:16&version=NKJV

We sing with the heart. A cappella singing. No musical instruments commanded.

2. Don't believe in the Old Testament
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. - Ephesians 2:14-16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians2:14-16&version=NKJV
We don't live under the Old Law.

Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. - 1 Corinthians 10:6 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Corinthians10:6&version=NKJV
We still learn from the Old Testament.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2Timothy3:16-17&version=NKJV
All Scripture is inspired of God both Old and New Testaments.

3. All Campbellites
Faith built on God's Word. Not Alexander Campbell. Jesus is the founder of the church (Matthew 16:18)

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. - 1 Corinthians 3:11 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1Corinthians3:11&version=NKJV
Jesus is the foundation of the church.

And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. - Ephesians 1:22-23 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians1:22-23&version=NKJV
Jesus is the head of the church.

4. One of many denominations
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. - John 17:20-21 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John17:20-21&version=NKJV
The church is to be one. Not divided into denominations.

5. Believe in water salvation.

Baptism essential for salvation. But Jesus' blood saves us. We contact His saving blood through baptism.

He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. - Mark 16:16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark16:16&version=NKJV
Belief plus baptism

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. - Acts 2:38 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts2:38&version=NKJV
Baptism remission of sins

And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’ - Acts 22:16 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts22:16&version=NKJV
Sins washed away through baptism.
